What Is Moodle?

Moodle is a learning management system (LMS) that can be used to complement face-to-face courses or deliver courses completely online.

Moodle enables students to view and download course content and participate in online activities that the Instructor may have enabled, such as assignments, discussion forums, quizzes, and chat.

Moodle enables instructors to create flexible and active online learning environments that are intuitive to use and easy to manage.

If Discussion Forums are being used in your course you can choose to have emails sent to you when any new post is made in that forum. This means you are Subscribed to a Forum.

Moodle 2 Upgrade: project updates and upcoming events

We would like to provide you with updates on the Moodle 2 Upgrade project for 2012/2013.

  • As previously announced, the new server will be ready for you to start developing 2012/2013 courses by May 1, 2012, although some system integration work and third-party connectivity (such as Turnitin) will continue to be implemented over the course of the summer. Students will not be added to 2012/2013 courses until July 2012.
  • Between May 1 and June 30, there will be periodic outages during the business hours to implement changes in the new environment. These outages will be announced in advance to minimize impact on your course development work; they will not affect your Summer 2012 courses.

In order to help you start the transition early, the Learning Technology Services is offering the following information sessions and workshops for instructors. 

Information Session: Moodle 2 Show and Tell 

This information session will provide you with an overview of some of the changes that would affect your existing workflow, including many user suggested features and enhancements that have been incorporated in Moodle 2.

Workshop: Moodle 2 Essentials 

This introductory workshop is intended for instructors who are complete beginners of Moodle as well as those who would like to master the basic steps of developing a Moodle course in the new environment. This session will introduce you to the core elements of a Moodle course and, through hands-on experience, expose you to the commonly used tools that instructors find most valuable.

If you can’t make it to any of these sessions, please note online training will be available after June 1. We are also in the process of updating all current documentation to guide you through changes and enhancements in Moodle 2.

Moodle Home Page Changes

Upon login, you will notice a few changes to the appearance of the Moodle home page. The Library Resources by Subject, Calendar, and the Help blocks have been added as defaults to the home page. The Library Resources by Subject block has been developed in accordance with the Library; it provides students with a direct link to search the York Library. The Help block is a customized block that is created to provide both instructors and students with time-sensitive information related to Moodle.
